vanity mirror furniture

Mirrored furniture has been a staple of home furniture design since the 12th century. Back in the old days (many centuries ago) the mirrors were made out of metals like iron, steel, and bronze but they still gave off that beautiful refined reflective look. In the 1920′s Art Deco mirrored furniture was all the rage. The 1960’s and 70’s ushered in a sort of renaissance for furniture and mirror design as people (like Marilyn Monroe and Frank Sinatra) in Hollywood started to use vanity mirror furniture more often in their homes and the general public began to imitate their décor.

Today you don’t see mirrored furniture quite so often because it has fallen out of fashion a little bit. Middle class America and novice home decorators got a little too carried away with using it to fill out homes and it began to look tacky and out of touch. Combine that with the fact that high quality mirrored accent furniture and mirrored bedroom furniture are pretty hard to come by and you start to see the style replaced with newer more abundant (if not less expensive) furniture pieces.

Even though people have stopped using mirrored furniture so often it still makes for great home design when used artfully. Too much of a good thing can be bad but if you have just the right amount of it you will really add to the style of a room. Here are three reasons that you should still own mirrored furniture even though it has fallen from grace:

Surface Reflects Light:

Mirrors have the amazing ability to completely open up a room because they can reflect light and images. If you have a small room in your house you can fill it with mirrors and instantly make it appear large and more open. Unlike regular furniture pieces that tend to clutter up or close in small room, the reflective qualities of mirror furniture can actually have the opposite effect.

Glamorous Aesthetic:

If you know how to properly place your mirrors furniture you can still achieve that classic Hollywood 1960’s glamour look. Room décor with silver, white, black, and gold color schemes can be accentuated by an artfully placed mirrored coffee table or mirrored armoire. As long as you use the mirrored pieces sparingly (you don’t want to turn your dining room into the mirrored chamber in Bruce Lee’s Enter the Dragon) you can really bring out the ornate qualities of a room and turn up the refinement meter.

Never Be Without a Mirror:

We all know how important it is to look our best at all times but when we are walking around our house (or a friend’s house) it can be a hassle to walk over to the bathroom or powder room to make touch ups and fix our hair. A piece of mirrored furniture in a room gives you the opportunity to amp up the Narcissism and check out how you look no matter what you’re doing.
